Abnormal uterine bleeding in peri and post menopausal women: comparison of efficacy of saline infusion sonography with transvaginal sonography

Background: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) can present with menorrhagia or metrorrhagia but cannot indicate the cause of bleeding, so further investigation is always needed. This study aimed to assess role Saline infusion sonography (SIS) in evaluating intracavitary lesions comparison transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) and thereby short listing patients for hysteroscopy.Methods: prospective analytical was conducted 64 women presenting AUB OBG department, Mazumdar Shaw Medical Center, Bangalore from November 2014 2015. Transvaginal ultrasound, followed by SIS were performed all. Hysterectomy specimen (gross cut section histopathology) taken as gold standard. Findings at TVS compared standard.Results: analysed Chi-square test. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) negative (NPV) detecting abnormalities calculated. found be more sensitive specific when TVS. Discrepancies detection polyp seen. 13 cases missed TVS, indicating high false rate whereas no polyps SIS. In our study, ET (endometrial thickness) than 18 mm observed 6 all these turned out SIS, need hysteroscopy whenever TVS.Conclusions: Study results have substantiated that a better tool assessment intra-cavitary especially polyps.
